Applique vs Sublimation vs Laser Engraving: Which Personalisation Is Right For You?

All three look beautiful — but they suit very different things. Here's the honest behind-the-scenes guide we'd give a friend.

Applique embroidery — soft, textured, premium

Fabric shapes are stitched onto a garment with decorative thread around the edges. The result is tactile and gorgeous in person. Best for baby grows, blankets, soft toys and anything that should feel handmade. Slightly more expensive but lasts decades.

Sublimation printing — full colour, smooth finish

Heat transfers the design directly into the fabric. Brilliant for full-colour photo designs, intricate patterns and bright child-friendly artwork. Sits flat against the skin so it's perfect for t-shirts, leggings, mugs and tote bags. Doesn't crack, peel or fade.

Laser engraving — for keepsakes that should last forever

Permanent burn-etched designs into wood, slate, acrylic or leather. The right choice for memory boxes, plaques, ornaments and signs — the moment something needs to feel like an heirloom, this is the technique.

Which should you pick?

  • Garments and soft items → applique or sublimation
  • Full-colour photo designs → sublimation
  • Wooden, slate or acrylic gifts → laser engraving
  • Heirloom keepsake → laser engraving
